As every winter, Bodega Josep Vicens faces the pruning season of the vineyard during its vegetative rest phase.
The main objective of this practice is to regulate the growth of the vine to ensure good grape production and maintain the long-term health of the vineyard.
Pruning, for all intents and purposes, consists of cutting certain shoots, branches or parts of the vine in order to optimize its yield for the next harvest season. Thus, the first step consists of selecting and evaluating those shoots on the vine that should be kept, based on their vigorousness and their potential to produce quality grapes. Thus, old or weak shoots are eliminated.
Depending on the productive season of the vine, pruning will be carried out according to the desired growth form or according to the quantity of grapes to be produced.
However, this process also serves to balance the quantity of leaves and the quantity of grapes, since a vine overloaded with grapes will not be able to ripen its fruit well, while a vine with a high quantity of leaves will not have enough energy to produce a good harvest.
In addition, pruning also helps to improve air circulation between the shoots, thus reducing the risk of diseases such as downy mildew In conclusion, this process is crucial because good pruning directly affects the quality of the grapes and, therefore, the quality of the wine produced.
